Film Score
Living Things. A thriller about the wilderness inside.
Living Things follows a woman and her growing suspicion of a pair of strangers. It’s a film about fear and perception—where every sight and sound seems to contain a dark secret. Because of this, I wanted to approach the score more as a composition of sounds, rather than notes of music. Violins were detuned, cellos were struck like drums, strings were scratched with the backs of bows. And always the shifting sounds of the players were kept intact.
Throughout the film, it’s the noises of others that lure and terrify our protagonist. So the sound of the human presence behind each instrument was as important to me as the instruments themselves. The musicians’ breaths and shifting bodies accompany the cries and creaking floorboards in the hallways of our story.
It’s only when we reach the final cut to black that the noises subside, and music emerges with the track "Everything We Remember"—a last breath of life to counterbalance the terror we've endured.
